Portland has quietly been a hotbed for fundamental change in what has statistically been one of the most dangerous industries: construction. Thanks to the persistence of a few key owners and the forward-thinking, professional and innovative contractors who help propel their business, construction in Portland has become dramatically safer in the past 15 years.

SafeBuild Alliance members and their guests filled the house at McMenamins Kennedy School for the May 8th quarterly meeting. The topic; Construction Work in Healthcare, clearly struck a cord in the construction community. In excess of 120 people were on hand to hear construction professionals from the region's top providers discuss the challenges faced in building healthcare projects.

Our panel featured:

Jana Brott, Manager, Infection Prevention and Control
Judy Webber, MA, BAN, RN, CIC
Legacy Health

Rick Sanders, Regional Construction Project Manager
Providence Health and Services

Gene Patrick, Construction Safety Manager
Oregon Health and Sciences University

Cary Vincent, Manager, Facilities Services
Kaiser Permanente

Topics ranged from Fire & Life Safety practices to means and methods for preventing infections and controlling construction environments. Thank you to each of our speakers for sharing their knowledge and their time with the group!

Please take a moment to head over and read more on the event from SafeBuild member Dede Montgomery at the OHSU CROET blog, found here.

Gene Patrick serves as the Construction Safety Manager for Oregon Health and Science University, where he has supported construction, renovation and maintenance work since 2003. Gene maintains a significant focus on healthcare renovation projects to ensure impacts and risks to patient care operations are assessed, controlled, and documented to meet requirements of The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Fire Codes, and OHSU healthcare policies.

Gene discussed the unique fire and life safety concerns presented by project work within active healthcare occupancies, as well as sample documentation used for meeting recordkeeping requirements for code compliance, accreditation, and response to potential litigation, (Infection Control Measures and Fire & Life Safety).

Rick Sanders, MBA Regional Construction Manager with Providence Health and Services, presented Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), detailing the operations, logistic communications and scheduling for the successful project completion. His talk focused on the owner perspective of dealing with contractors and subcontractors on projects while supporting the whole team involved.

Each quarter, SafeBuild Alliance provides a forum for networking with industry owners and peers, and the opportunity to listen to experts like those listed above to discuss their best practices, and what makes them unique.
